Essay about the history of English

An essay about the history of English definitely qualifies as one of the most interesting and informative essays that one could ever be asked to write.

The English language is one of the oldest languages in the world. The language of English, as it is known today has gone through a series of changes to become what it is today. English can be divided into three main periods namely the old English, the Middle English and the modern English.

Old English refers to the first period when English started to acquire the status of being a language of many people during the mixing of people from different backgrounds. From this period, the English language was mixed with many other languages especially those from the Angles, Saxons and the Jutes.

During this period of different people mixing, some of the cultures influenced the English language as some of the English words seemed to have been borrowed from these cultures which included the Norsemen, Danes, old England and the Romans.

The Middle English period is the period when English suffered its biggest transformation. The invasion by the Normans is thought to have greatly transformed the English language given the numerous words that were introduced which also made English go underground as a vulgar tone. English did not die however but acquired a few words from the French language to become a richer lingua.

The last of three periods, that of the modern English, is the period of the English as it is known today. This period saw the use of printing machines that helped written English spread and grow alphabetization.
