A Red rose, a satin heart and a cunning card are the usual lovers gifts on Valentines Day. Duffy is rattling harsh on these clichéd [well-worn] symbols of Valentines Day. In the poem Duffy suggests these normal cards, red roses type gifts are not based on reality.

Duffy seems to be a tough character or has she been so hurt by a failed relationship, her jaundiced go through is expressed in this poem? That makes her sensitive rather than hard.
Duffy looks at the ways an onion plant is similar to love. She uses the onion as symbol. The onion represents light, discovery, pain and tears. The onion represents the tough side of love. Perhaps the poem is about hurt and pain. Duffy thinks an onion stands for the truth about love. The poem takes a deep look at love.
It is not fairish about Saint Valentines Day type love. It looks at what love is made up of, what makes a relationship meaningful. She defends the words in her poem I am trying to be unfeigned. We only defend what we feel will be attacked, so she is not as sure of herself or her views as she may seem.
In the second stanza, Duffy explains how an onion works as a love gift. The brown skin of the onion hides the white veg thats inside. This brown skin is the wrapping paper of the gift, the onion. Duffy compares her gift, the onion, to the bootleg wrapped in brown paper. This picture of the moon represents the whole onion, just after it has been peeled.
