•In the document Restif de la Bretonne writes about what he witnessed on the second day of the massacres. The Massacres were fueled by fear of the encroachment from Prussia, food shortages and radical propaganda. About 150 flock stony-broke into jails, attacked and killed prisoners because they feared the prisoners would aid in Prussia’s invasion of France. After he witnessed the murder of a woman, he saw a cover head, “someone had told him that they were going to wash it, curl its hair, stick it on the end of a pike and carry it past the windows of the temple.”

II. parentage
•The intended audience would be the citizens of France and the rest of Europe.
•The document was an attempt by the author to inform the people of France and European Countries of the tragedies that he witnessed during the massacres. The tone of the document is very somber.




•The author is concerned with the amount of violence that took place. When he says “what supererogatory cruelty”, it illustrates his concern.

III. Presuppositions
•The ideas and values that the author discusses are varied from the ideas and values of America; however they are not that often different from that of developing nations. For example, in the Middle East more people are killed as a result of phantasmal and ethnic differences.
•In 1792 the murders believed that they were just in cleanup spot innocent people under the assumption that they would aid Prussia in the invasion of France.
