Imagine a Place where there were good deal like you and I, who felt emotion and had creative and grotesque ideas. Now in that alike(p) place imagine a completely opposite group of people, people who frowned upon imagination and creativity, people who felt no emotion and only made finalitys from fact. Could you live without your dreams and desires? identity comes from people who think differently and collect unrealistic thoughts; these same people are the ones that have contributed to advancing our society and the ones that have become popular names in history.
In a response article to hard times called, The Two Classes of Characters in tight Times, Hippolyte Taine talks about two groups, in which the characters of leaden Times fit in. The First group or sort consists of people who have getings and emotions and the second consists of people who dont have those characteristics. He also speaks about how Dickens, the author of profound Times, attacks education built on statistics. Another topic he brings up is how dickens sides with the lower class characters and how he believes that the upper class characters are living with false virtue, happiness, and science.
Emotions and feelings are the base of our decision making; how we feel about something or someone, who and what we love, and our goals and desires. I feel that these qualities are essential in the world and if people didnt have these qualities, like the ones in Hard Times, those people would not contribute to the progression of our society.
The class of people in Hard times that have no emotion are Gradgrind, Gradgrinds wife, and Bounderby. There are a few others, but I consider them to be on both sides of the fence. Taine classifies these characters as he does because of the education and beliefs that they are a part of.
