Dr. Faustus has been praised for his high poetry and its bidding of blank verse. This is of course undeniable but that accounts only in a minor way for the greatness of the play. Marlowes work has a consistent theme and his substitution protagonists are fierce individuals. The central protagonist sells his soul to the devil for a period of 24 years with an agreement that the latter should provide him all the materialistic pleasure and power. He considers, and then rejects, philosophy, medicine, law, and immortal before deciding to study magic. Significantly, Faustus rejects theology because of a misunderstanding of the relationship between divine justice and Christian mercy. Throughout the play, the union of good and evil is meant to showing the sharp contrast between the good and evil characters to his audience. This is peculiarly apparent in the characters on the Good Angel and the condemnable Angel. Several times in the play, the two angels make their appearance to Dr.Faustus, the Good Angel attempting to bring Dr. Faustus back to Christ part the Evil Angel convinces him to continue giving his allegiance to Hell.
