The poem has a slightly humorous and sarcastic edge, as it compares many things that are seemingly halved, but are alone normal to himself. The aim of the poem is to get rid of the prepossession towards “half-caste” people, who are looked upon as being only half a person.
The use of Picasso, a well-known, respected artist, challenges our ideas of colour and design, and because Picasso is famous, it demonstrates the ridiculousness of calling some one half a person, when Picasso’s half-caste cornerstonevases are wonderful! As well as this, the poet describes Tchaikovsky’s take a crap as a “half-caste symphony” because of the mix of black and snow-covered piano keys. Also, the poet refers to the sky being half-caste if there is light and fanny at well in that case, English skies are incessantly half-caste! Using examples that English people will know some is a good poetic technique, and challenges our ideas.
There is a pesky tone towards the reader when the poet says “Ah listening to yu wid de keen / half of mih pinnule / Ah lookin at yu wid de keen / half of mih eye” because the reader has brand him as a “half-caste” half person, therefore he can only look and listen with half the attention.
Later, there are quiet lines, when the poem is rather poignant and refers to the poet: “I half-caste humans being / cast half a shadow”. It hits the reader emotionally and they sympathise with the poet. But then a challenge is thrown down and the poem is turned round to the reader. The poet indicates that “yu”, the reader, has confounded half of his story, because of narrow-mindedness.
