The peasants farmed and took care of the land because they could have a home and pabulum to eat. This was the beginning of trade guilds that started to form . Guilds were like the modern day unions. Merchants, artisans and farmers were part of these guilds. The master/journeyman system came into existence almost this time and so you began to see more shops around and specialisation of labor during this period.
