When a psyche migrates to settle in another country, (particularly after going through and through a migrant hostel), there argon both prescribed and negative consequences. One of the negatives is failing to belong or creation socially accepted.
Peter Skrzynecki’s poems 10 bloody shame roadway and St Patrick’s College both give an outlook as to the positive and negative consequences that are experienced by migrants.
10 Mary Street
10 Mary Street is an enkindle poem as it shifts in time from when Peter was a boy to when he is much older. It communicates with his experience of the liveliness he lived with his family in a sept at 10 Mary Street. There are many conceptual ideas in this poem ranging from belonging to unity’s country of origin, belonging to the country in which they straightway live, belonging together, belonging to their home and their home belonging to them.
In other words; the House becomes a symbol of the Families life and history.
The poem reads:
“For nineteen years
We kaput(p)
Each morning, shut the house
Like a well-oiled lock,
Hide the key
Under a rusty bucket:
To take and work-
Over that still too-narrow bridge,
Around the occurrenceory
That was always burning exhaust”
In this first stanza the writer uses the image of the House and grinder to instill a sense of drabness and monotony when describing his and his bring up’s life at 10 Mary Street. They did the alike(p) thing every day for nineteen years as if nothing ever changed in their lives.
They always left the house perfectly on time, a routine, shutting and locking it to coerce it safe and strong and something to come back to.
Here “departed” has a number of associations; leaving the home of safety and quilt to encounter their new world. They left their home in Poland screwing and 10 Mary Street is now their whole world.
